Transition San Francisco


Mission Statement: To promote and inspire an abundant, local and resilient San Francisco by unleashing the collective genius of our community to dramatically reduce carbon emissions - in response to climate change; to significantly rebuild resilience - in response to peak oil; and to greatly strengthen our local economy -in response to economic instability.

Transition San Francisco is recognized by Transition US as an official Transition Initiative.
We are a positive and supporting group of San Francisco community members who are thinking about how to move San Francisco community forward to implementing ideas and policies, which will enable the city to deal with Climate Change and depleting energy while developing more resilient San Francisco neighborhoods and Bay Area region.
 
We are currently in the process of developing our vision, educational materials to reach out to neighborhood groups, and creating a community map.  San Francisco has been in transition for a long time and we want to utilize the previously done research, working with groups that are already helping us transition, and create a map of San Francisco Transition Resources, so that they are available to everyone in one location.
 
We need additional volunteers to help with research, outreach, and event planning.

Why Transition?

The Transition approach empowers communities to squarely face the challenges of peak oil, climate change and economic instability, and to unleash the collective genius of their own people to find the answers to this momentous question: For all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive, how are we going to drastically reduce carbon emissions (in response to climate change), significantly rebuild resilience (in response to peak oil), and greatly strengthen our local economy (in response to economic instability)?

Transition Initiatives make no claim to have all the answers, but by building on the wisdom of the past and accessing the pool of ingenuity, skills and determination in our communities, the solutions can readily emerge.

Now is the time for us to take stock and to start re-creating our future in ways that are not based on cheap, plentiful and polluting oil and other fossil fuels, but on localized food, sustainable energy sources, resilient local economies and an enlivened sense of community well-being.

If it appears that we think the Transition process is defined by people who have all the answers, please understand that none of us involved knows for sure if this will work. Transition is a social experiment on a massive scale.

What we are convinced of is this:

  • If we wait for the governments, it'll be too little, too late
  • If we act as individuals, it'll be too little
  • But if we act as communities, it might just be enough, just in time.
